The Josef Regional Underground Research Centre (URC) comprises almost 6 km of underground tunnels and galleries, based in a former gold mine. The mission of the URC is:

  1. Technological development and innovation focused on new technologies, competitive products and services in the field of underground structures
  2. Rapid transfer of research results towards practical applications
  3. Training and re-qualification of workers in underground structures
  4. Marketing, expert services and accredited testing

The facilities offer a unique background for teaching, research, training courses and field trips provided by the Czech Technical University, along with their partners which include Karlsruher Institut für Technologie, Beijing Research Institute of Uranium Geology, Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, the Grimsel Underground Rock Laboratory.

Key projects include:

  • DOPAS
  • Modern2020
  • CEBAMA
  • PETRUS III
  • SWISS
  • JOPRAD (Joint Programming on Radioactive Waste Disposal) platform
  • Construction of the 1st Czech Underground Migration Laboratory with the Potential Application of Active Tracers
  • Transfer of Migration Parameter Values of Granitic Rocks from the Microscale into the Real Rock Massif Scale (PAMIRe)
  • Assembly, Running and Evaluation of the Mock-Up-Josef Demonstration Experiment
  • Determination of the Migration Parameters of Rocks with Fissure Permeability using Fluorescent Solutions
  • Gas Migration in the Medium of (Compacted) Smectitic Clays
  • Research of Bentonite Stability in in-situ Conditions at Temperatures of up to 95°C

Subsurface areas of the Josef URC are being continually adapted and extended to attract and cater for emerging and innovative research activities. It is a member of the Underground Research Facilities (URF) Network, the European Nuclear Education Network (ENEN), Training and Demonstration of Waste Disposal Technologies in Underground Research Facilities (URF Network) and Implementing Geological Disposal - Technological Platform (IGD-TP). There are more facilities to come, we are currently in discussion with these facilities about engaging them in the TCS. We would be extremely happy to hear about other facilities that would like to engage.
